Is it mirroring? Or sympathetic resonance?

Does your cat take on your stress? Or your dog, your grief?

I have sat across from enough heartbroken people to know how this question feels. When your animal friend is unwell, or anxious, or simply not themselves, somewhere in the tender geography of your love for them, a thought takes root. Fueled by what you read online, you start suspecting that they have done this for you, taken something away and carried it away in their small, faithful bodies.

Reality - your cats and dogs are not here to absorb your sorrows.

Yes, they feel what you feel. And yet, the idea that they are on a mission to absorb your suffering and carry it away? Really? That part deserves a more critical look. As a teacher once told me, "they have better things to do." While the populist term for this is "mirroring", that word does not fully do justice to the truth of how energy fields influence each other. The words that help us understand this are coherence and sympathetic resonance.

Mirroring implies a passive reflection; resonance implies an active, energetic participation. And a researcher named Rollin McCraty, his young son Josh, and a dog named Mabel walked into a laboratory one ordinary day and proved it with this experiment.

Josh, Mabel, and the HeartMath Experiment

The air in the sterile observation room was bristling with anticipation as Dr. Rollin McCraty adjusted the leads on the ambulatory ECG monitors. On one side of the glass sat his son, Josh, a fifteen-year-old with his shoulders hunched; on the other, Mabel, their family dog who was devoted to Josh, waited with restless paws and an anxious whine.

The baseline readings on the monitors were a jagged mess of spikes and valleys, the "chaotic" rhythm of stress. Mabel’s heart was racing, a frantic beat that captured her confusion at being in a strange laboratory environment with strange equipment and wires all around.

"Whenever you're ready, Josh," McCraty’s voice crackled over the intercom.

Josh closed his eyes. His mind went back to loving thoughts of Mabel, the way she greeted him at the door, the weight of her head on his knee. He began the slow, rhythmic breathing of coherence. On the digital display, the transformation was mind-blowing. Josh’s heart rate began to smooth out into a symmetrical undulating wave, a perfect sine curve of physiological peace. Then, the impossible happened. Without Josh touching her, without him even speaking a word, Mabel’s frantic heart rhythm began to reflect his. Her jagged spikes evened out. Her breathing slowed. On the monitor, her heart-rhythm pattern shifted into a near-perfect synchronization with Josh’s. It was as if an invisible thread had been pulled between them, vibrating at exactly the same frequency.

For a few moments, the two beings, different species, separate bodies, were pulsing as one single energetic system. The data confirmed what many animal lovers had claimed for centuries: the bond isn't just emotional; it is a literal, measurable conversation of the heart.

You can read the complete story here.

You too can create a healing space with sympathetic resonance.

Imagine placing two tuning forks next to each other. When you strike one, the other begins to sing at the same frequency without being touched. Your heart is the first tuning fork. Your animal friend is the second. The electromagnetic field your heart generates is measurable, real, and extending well beyond the edges of your body. It is the medium through which this connection happens.

When your energy field is jagged and spiky with worry, your companion cats and dogs feel the harshness. And when your energy field eases into steadiness, they feel it, and their energy field starts matching yours, just like Mabel tuned into Josh.

You can help your cats and dogs by regulating your energy field - with simple practices such as breathwork, meditation or anything else that sings to your heart - maybe singing, or dancing, or coloring. You can become the beacon of steadfastness, and an ocean of calmness that they will tune into and be comforted and calmed. It is a great practice for stressful situations like fireworks, or when on travels with your dogs or cats.

Coherence and sympathetic resonance is one of the simplest practices that anyone can do, irrespective of whether you are a beginner or an expert. It's energy healing 101 for humans of companion animals. This video explores what sympathetic resonance is all about:

Are Animals Really Carrying Our Stress? Sympathetic Resonance Explained

So, what happens when we are having a bad day...

It is natural then to ask, that if our animal friends are influenced by our state of calmness, what happens when we get out of the wrong side of the bed.

We will always have those days, which are messy, where nothing seems to go our way, stuff happens. On such days the accumulated weight of ordinary life makes coherence feel very far away. On those days, your animals love you anyway, with the uncomplicated wholeness that only they seem to manage.

What you can do is interrupt the resonance, by shielding your energy field. There are many practices to do this. A simple one is to use creative visualization and intention to wrap a golden bubble around your field, so that only the highest of frequencies are allowed in or out. Shielding isn't about building a wall between you and your animal friend; it’s about maintaining the integrity of your own field so you don’t inadvertently broadcast static into theirs.

I talk more about this along with a guided practice in this video.

Messy Energy, Messy Resonance? How to Make Your Animals Feel Supported on Bad-Hair Days.

Unlike mirroring, sympathetic resonance lets you set the tone. You have a choice. What would you choose for you and your beloved animal companions?

(do cats need summer holidays?)

Dearest Readers,

Out here in this part of the world, humans are getting ready for their annual summer vacation. Very soon, hordes of tourists will descend on this sleepy hill town. Cabs will run up narrow hill tracks as though it is a Formula One circuit, and loud music will blare from all around, all in the name of entertainment.

What about cats? We do our jobs, we look after our humans, nudge them back on their path when they tend to stray. That is work. And yet, nobody seems to think that we need vacations too.

Just because you see me chilled out does not mean I would not want one.

But I have specifications. First and foremost, none of this travel business. Carbon footprint sorted right away. I have never understood why someone needs to go from point A to point B, only to come back to point A. Me? I would rather stay at point A.

To me, a holiday means getting up late with Idee, and not needing to remind her to stay grounded before she meets clients. A lazy afternoon with a new pigeon at my windowsill every day, because pigeons bring such stimulating conversations. A new cat dancer toy would be appreciated, because I chewed through the last one. It was nearing the end of its life anyway. And a complete moratorium on medicines. A holiday is a holiday.

And in the evenings, I would like Idee to sit next to me with no agendas and to-do lists. Just the fading April light and a companionable silence. Perhaps that is what a vacation truly is, the gift of unhurried time, in the place you already love, with the people who matter most.

Now I must go. More chores, more nudges. You see why cats need holidays?

You are welcome.
